How we work. The rules.

We at Consultile have a thorough knowledge of theoretical and practical guidelines that underpin tile work resulting in acceptable product for clients. The Australian Standards, Australian Building code and relevant Fair Trading guides are referred to by us in disputes over faults and shortcomings in professional workmanship. In most cases, these guidelines are technical and specific when used to settle disputes. Consultile will reference those industry guidelines when providing written reports and when mediating in disputes.

What is a fault?

Varied processes and finishes result in client dissatisfaction through failure to follow established industry standards. Some common examples are shown below. We can help if you have experienced these unresolved issues.

Efflorescence or leeching of residue

Exterior tile work can be subject to a white substance leeching from grout joints and underneath laid tiles. This can be avoided with good design but once present is difficult to rectify.

Drummy or hollow sounding tiles

This can be an indication of delamination or tiles becoming loose by not being correctly adhered to the surface.

Leaking showers & bathrooms

This is a common problem with many technical matters involved. Damage rectification because of failure to follow industry standards can be extremely costly.

Dislodged and falling tiles

This mainly results from a failure to comply with industry standards. There are many other possible causes not immediately obvious through a superficial examination of the work site.

Lipping tiles

Occurs when tiles poorly laid, uneven and adjacent to one another with one edge higher than another. The result is an unsightly uneven appearance and potential trip hazard.

Cracked tiles

Many cracks are caused by no or improper allowance for expansion or contraction in the tile system. Movement of various types then causes cracking. Incorrect fixing methods can also result in cracked tiles.

General workmanship

Industry standards determine guidelines for what is professionally acceptable in relation to all aspects of tile work. Issues and disputes over matters such as uneven joints, discolouration of tiles, improper drainage and leakages happen when there is a lack of compliance with those standards guidelines.

Mould growth

Mould growth is a complex issue often exacerbated by poor tiling practice. Mould presence and growth is a health concern as well as being a loss of amenity of habitable space in a dwelling.
